Gap Sand by Cement Australia is a specialised blend of graded fine sands and additives designed to lock brick and block paving securely into place. Perfect for filling joints up to 3mm wide, this product creates a stable, workable joint that enhances the longevity and appearance of paved surfaces. It’s an easy-to-use solution for both DIY and professional paving projects.

Gap Sand Applications

  • Joint filling for brick and block paving (up to 3mm gaps)

Gap Sand Key Features

  • Stable jointing: Forms a workable yet firm bond between pavers
  • Weed and insect control: Inhibits growth and infestation
  • Paver protection: Minimizes distortion and movement

Coverage:

  • Brick-shaped pavers: One 20kg bag covers approx. 3.5 m² (3mm gap)
  • 400mm square pavers: One 20kg bag covers approx. 12 m² (3mm gap, 50mm depth)
  • Non-cement based: Provides a firm, flexible finish rather than a hard mortar

How to Use Gap Sand

Step 1: Apply the Sand

Lay pavers according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Sweep Gap Sand into all joints using a stiff broom until fully filled.

Step 2: Compact the Joints

Use a vibrating compactor, rubber mallet, or similar tool over the entire paved area to settle the sand into the joints and ensure firmness.

Step 3: Clean Up

Sweep the surface thoroughly, topping up joints where needed, and remove all excess sand from the paver tops.

Step 4: Wet and Set

Lightly mist the paved surface with water, ensuring even wetting without heavy spraying or flooding. Allow the Gap Sand to dry and firm up—paving is ready for traffic once fully set.

Note: Allow 3 days for the sand to bond the pavers before regular use.

Gap Sand Limitations

  • Joint size: Suitable only for gaps up to 3mm; for larger joints, use Cement Australia Sand & Cement.
  • Not a grout: Finished Gap Sand is firm but not hard like cement-based products.
  • Moisture sensitivity: Softens when wet (e.g., from rain or hosing) and only firms up when completely dry. Avoid pointing water streams directly into gaps during cleaning.
Not for wet areas: Not recommended for paving continually exposed to moisture (e.g., pool surrounds).
  • Non-permanent: As a non-cement product, it doesn’t provide a permanent rigid bond like mortar.

Storage & Handling of Gap Sand

  • Store in a dry place, off the ground, and protected from moisture.
  • Shelf life: Approximately 6 months from manufacture date if stored as recommended.
  • Once opened, use the entire bag on the same day.

Gap Sand Coverage

  • Brick-shaped pavers: One 20kg bag covers approx. 3.5 m² (3mm gap)
400mm square pavers: One 20kg bag covers approx. 12 m² (3mm gap, 50mm depth)
